Coach Gayle Hatch who recieved the 2004 Professional
Football Strength and Conditioning Coaches Society President's Award at the 2005 NFL
Combine says it is time to change the method of testing the bench press at the NFL
Combine. Players now bench press 225 pounds for maximum repetitions to measure upper-body
strength. Hatch says this just measures upper-body strength endurance not maximal
strength. A 3 rep max would be a better test for maximal strength. Attempts should be made with proper technique: feet
flat to ground; butt, back and head flat on the bench; full range of motion.
